So, how are you doing? Obviously it’s a rhetorical question, but really - how are you doing? I hope you are having a wonderful day and if not, hopefully this short blog will cheer you up and make you happy!
Our grandkids are so fun and always fun to be around. We are young grandparents but it's still hard to keep up with their energy. It feels like they are always on 100 and saying “again, again again”. We actually started a new game yesterday called “Dance Off”. The game goes like this, one of us (me, Roe, Emmie, and Lil Bean) says “Dance Off” and no matter where we are we have to have a dance off. The only rule is, we can’t do it at funerals, so don’t worry. I’m not a good dancer so I’m at a huge disadvantage. I hope this game will last for many years and that I can eventually beat them. I lost to Roe & Emmie yesterday when we started the game and I think that’ll be a common theme. However, I’m sure it’ll be fun with many laughs and many memories.
One of the most awesome things about having grandchildren is watching your children grow up into adults and become wonderful parents while not making or repeating any of your stupid mistakes of course. One of the most joyful things one can experience is experiencing unconditional love. Your children and grandchildren are just that - love without conditions. You love them so much it’s actually beyond infinity and back no matter what. Unconditional love is pure and that’s how our love is for our children and grandchildren.
We grew up like everyone else did. Parents want their children to be successful and better off than they were and so on and so on. If we’re lucky, we’ll see multiple generations being happy, successful and prospering. Last year we had four generations living in our home at one time and it was a special moment in our story: 1) Danny & Ginger, 2) Scott & Stephanie, 3) Ford & Casey, and 4) Roe & Emmie). Young grandchildren are funny, unpredictable, learning, discovering the world, playing, care free, etc. They are everything wrapped into one beautiful package. We are so fortunate to have three grandchildren, all beautiful granddaughters, and possibly more in the future but we’ll save that for another blog for another time.

Stephanie purchased the most awesome dress-up costume set from someone in Gloucester once we had our first granddaughter. It’s been one of the most favorite items our granddaughters play with when they come over. We have an entire room dedicated just to them. In addition, I got a recycled playground set from Aaron that he graciously donated to us and we installed it in our back yard well before the grandkids could play on it. Emmie was around one when she would go down the slide that probably looked like the biggest slide at Water Country to her but she would say, “again, again, again” every time and then stick out her arms for me to catch her at the bottom. She would look at her big sis running up the ladder and follow right behind her trying to be just like her. The sandbox we added underneath is also one of their favorite spots when they come over. My shed is full of bikes, jeeps, and dinosaur trucks. We have some little firetrucks upstairs. We have some toys in the garage. We’re saving all that for them to play with for years to come and we will recycle them when they’ve grown out of them, unless more keep coming of course.
Lastly, Stephanie and I have some really cool or at least they are cool to us, grandparent names. Stephanie is affectionately called Fe or FeFe and I’m called Grandslam, Slam or Slammie but of course never late for dinner! We even have a license plate on our golf cart to prove it, ‘SLAM N FE’, so now you know why. Stephanie got her name years earlier when our niece, Adaleigh, couldn’t say Stephanie but said Fe instead. It stuck and what a wonderful name that has been embraced by all. I on the other hand wanted to get out in front of someone naming me so I named myself. I thought it was a wonderful play on words since I love baseball and have hit as well as given up a grand slam or two. Of course my son-in-laws, Ford and Aaron wanted to make sure I was going to get a name like PeePaw or something else so I made sure that didn’t happen. No offense to any PeePaws out there. Let us know what your grandparent names are and why as we’d love to know.
Happy October Birthdays to Fe, Slam and don’t forget Adam (the one who refuses to call me Slam)!
Bonus trivia fact just in case you’re wondering or you want to get to know who I am. Some of my other nicknames over the years were: Scotty (by many people and I was also named after a song ‘Watching Scotty Grow’), Pig-Pen (parents initially get credit for that one), Doo Doo Brown (thanks Sigma Pi fraternity), May May (CNU baseball team), Pig-Pen (The Apprentice School baseball team), Scotty Too Hottie (they loved that one at Newington Baptist Church especially when I was leading them in prayer), Uncle Doo Doo (thanks to Reed) and Scotty Not Hottie (Mike at Richmond Decorating Center because he refuses to call me Hottie).
